February Update

February 01, 2018

It's February already and Winter Break is just around the corner - a good time to sleep in, have fun, and recharge! It's a nice surprise to have some warm sunny days during the winter that contrast to the long rainy days of last year.  Get out and enjoy the good weather while you can!

January and February have been busy months for the HSC. We held the winter "Black and White" Dance and we will be hosting a fun "off the mountain" Skate night. Thank you to all the parents who volunteer and help make these events a success. We could not do it without you. Our wonderful Snack Shack is now closed, until further notice, as construction begins at the school. We held an appreciation lunch for Molly to thank her for all her years of service to the program and her decidication to making healthy meals for our children. Speaking of food, see the notice below for the upcoming Teacher Appreciation Brunch. As our school participates in the 2018 Great Kindness Challenge, we thought that we could all share in one small act of kindness by hosting a brunch for the teachers this Valentine's Day.

We continue to have our adult and youth yoga classes over at the new community center near Building Blocks. See the section on after-school sports to find out what sports are in progress and how your child can get involved in the upcoming months. There's plenty of room for parent participation. Just talk with the coaches - there's always a need for volunteers.

Helen O' Dea has started an after school art program with the support of the Home and School Club for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The demand for the classes has been phenominal which has led her to add more sessions. Read more about the classes below and get the details on the HSC programs page.

As always, we are busy planning more enriching experiences for our children and helping support the C.T. English academic staff whereve they need the assistance most. We are a volunteer group and welcome any time that you can spend with us planning or hosting the events and programs that we run. If you've got ideas for something new - please share them with us too. We're always open to new opportunities. There's an open invitation to join us at a Board Meeting or to jump on a committee where you will get to meet new people, have fun, and help shape and enrich the lives of our children.

Thank you all for your continued support. Have a wonderful February!

Farewell to Snack Shack!

After many years of service to our school and the community Molly Surgalski, who has run the lunch program at the school for the last number of years, has retired. She will be missed by the students who love her and the food she provides daily. She will also be missed by the teams who have worked with her each day, and in many cases, who have learned tips and tricks in the kitchen. We wish Molly well on her future endeavors.

On a very practical note, not having Snack Shack means that there are no lunches for purchase at the school. At this time we have also stopped selling lunch cards. Keep any unused cards and partially used cards for when Snack Shack returns.

Teacher Appreciation Savory Brunch

Wednesday, February 14

The C.T. academic and support staff show our children love and kindness throughout the year. As our school participates in the 2018 Great Kindness Challenge, we thought that we could all share in the initiative of leading life with kindness - with one small act of kindness - hosting a brunch for the teachers this Valentine's Day. A simple gesture to show the staff how much we care about them and how much we appreciate their work.

Please join our efforts and bring brunch items to the C.T. staff lounge on February 13, if you would like your items added to a platter that we will prepare. Bring them Wednesday, February 14, if the items don't need any preparation at the school.

 Fun Night: Skate Night

Feb. 16th, 7:00pm - 9:00 pm at Sharks Ice (Solar4America in San Jose). Your children can use their All Access passes or they can pay a $15 fee to join us for a night of fun on the ice. The admission fee includes skating admission and skate rental. Skating is from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. From 7:00pm onwards you can get fitted for skates. We will also have the warm room between Center and South Rink for kids to take a break and/or parents to hang out.  Refreshments will be provided for students.

The Home and School Club will have a table set up at the main entrance off 10th Street where students must check in.  Pick up is 9:00pm sharp.

Parents willing to help with Skate night should contact Alexa at

Immersive Art Classes with Helen O' Dea

This is a C.T. English Middle School after-school art program. This series of art classes will give students a solid basis and understanding of the creative process, and art concepts and techniques. Students will immerse themselves in the creative process putting their learning to practice with hands-on experience. The art class encourages self-expression where they will experience the freedom of tapping into their own intuition as they learn to work with various mediums and are taught various techniques. The focus is on creating original art works. One size does not fit all when it comes to art. For details and registration and payment information, see the Home and School Club Programs.

  • Class 1: Introduction to Ceramics (Tuesday, in progress) - BOOKED OUT
  • Class 2: Fundamentals of Drawing (Tuesday, starts 03/06) - REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN
  • Class 3: Ceramics II (Thursday, starts 03/08
  • Class 4: Color Fundamentals (Tuesday, starts 04/24)

The art classes can accommodate all students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades of varying abilities and experience. No prior art training is required. Interest in art is a must.

 Yoga Update

Now that the PE Portable has been removed to make way for the new construction, Yoga classes are being held in the  temporary community room (near Building Blocks) across the street from the school.  Class times for both adult and youth yoga remain the same. All  CT students attending after school yoga, must have written permission on file at the CT office to cross the bridge after school (parents can email Julie in the C.T. office). Loma students attending the class must  be picked up at school and brought over to the community room by parents or by a C.T. sibling who has permission to do so.
